چکیده

The concentration of toxic metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil, their bioaccumulation Lumbricus terrestris areas around Kolo Creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria were evaluated this study. 12 soil samples collected from 4 sites, while also where obtained. Toxic extracted using aqua regia quantified with a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Extraction PAHs was achieved by liquid-liquid soxhlet extraction, gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. factor (BAF) for both calculated. results obtained study showed that the all studied within respective regulatory limits soil. BAF less than 1 indicating minimal terrestris. Ʃ16 ranged 7.30 to 77.7 mg kg-1 1.10 4.75 across respectively. values individual which indicated PAH congeners either not bioaccumulated or accumulated metabolized. Hence, analysis metabolites is recommended.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments and soils from oil exploration areas of the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from rivers and canals adjoining some oil exploration sites in the Niger Delta and surface soils from host communities were examined. The concentrations of 28 target PAHs ranged from 65 to 331 ng/g (average: 168 ng/g) and from 24 to 120 ng/g (average: 80 ng/g) in the sediment and soil samples, respectively. Two-ring PAHs w...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Niger Delta soil: contamination sources and profiles

The distribution and sources of PAHs in soil as well as PAHs profiles have been investigated in areas with anthropogenic pollution in the Niger Delta (Nigeria) such as Warri and Ughelli. PAHs were identified in 21 soil samples (010cm upper layer) collected in May, 2003. The typical total PAHs level in Niger Delta soil ranged from 182 ± 112 – to 433 ±256 ìg/kg dw. PAH concentrations in soil samp...

Transport of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Calcareous Wetland Soil

Knowledge of transport and degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important in assessing PAH contamination of soils and water resources. The transport of naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene and phenanthrene was determined in a contaminated calcareous soil obtained from the Shadegan wetland (Khozestan, Iran) considering a column study in laboratory conditions. The PAHs were added ...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air from industrial areas in Lagos and Ogun states, Nigeria

There is currently scarce information on the occurrence and distributions of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the air from industrial estates in Nigeria. Hence, the present study aims to evaluate the extent and sources of pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the air from some industrial estates in Lagos and Ogun States, Nigeria. Ten air samples have been collected from the...

Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Hide and Skin of Slaughtered Cattle and Goats in Anambra State, Nigeria

Background: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among hazardous chemicals that may endanger food safety. In Nigeria, hides and skins of animals are edible and used in dishes. So, this study investigated the levels of PAHs in singed and unsinged hides and skins of animals slaughtered at three districts abattoirs (Obosi, Uga, and Kwata) in Anambra State, Nigeria. Methods: Using gas chrom...
